In the Early Years at Sydenham Primary School, we aim to provide the highest quality care and education for all our children, thereby giving them a strong foundation for their future learning.

We create a safe and happy environment with motivating and enjoyable learning experiences that enable children to become confident and independent. We value the individual child and work alongside parents and carers to meet their needs and help every child to reach their full potential.

We plan an exciting and challenging curriculum based on our observation of children’s needs, interests, and stages of development across the seven areas of learning to enable the children to achieve and exceed the early learning goals.

All seven areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected and are therefore taught with a cross-curricular play-based approach.

Children and families meet school staff in the Summer term, before children join Reception, allowing them to make relationships and feel secure in their new environment. School adults work in partnership with parents and carers, passing information about learning progress between home and school through face to face conversations, review meetings, and in our weekly learning letters.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old. All schools and Ofsted-registered early years providers must follow the EYFS, including childminders, preschools, nurseries and school reception classes.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework supports an integrated approach to early learning and care. It gives all professionals a set of common principles and commitments to deliver quality early education and childcare experiences to all children.

As well as being the core document for all professionals working in the foundation years, the EYFS framework gives mums and dads confidence that regardless of where they choose for their child’s early education, they can be assured that the same statutory commitments and principles will underpin their child’s learning and development experience.

At Sydenham Primary School, we believe that children’s learning in the Early Years is most significant when children are:

  • enthused and engaged
  • committed and challenged
  • collaborative and expressive
  • imaginative and creative
  • confident and independent thinkers

We plan our Early Years curriculum to ensure that learning:

  • connects with children’s interests
  • has breadth and balance
  • is enquiry-led and discovery-based
  • is vibrant and memorable

The Early Years Foundation Stage sets the standard for learning, development and care for children from birth until the end of Reception.  Further information is attached;
